ABOUT THE COMPANY

As a painter, Kevin’s goals were to add beauty to the world and meaning to his own life, so it was a natural transition when he made the switch from traditional painting to textiles. Kevin believes that “with beauty and meaning, inspiration comes naturally, often and from everywhere.” Sometimes it is the simplest of things that bring out the most fantastic work. Kevin’s latest design was inspired by a pattern of a fence that a butterfly had landed on as his daughter was chasing it. While Kevin’s start was in painting, he quickly realized that novice artists have a hard time selling their work, not because they are bad painters, but because they do not always have the business savvy to market their work. A friend then suggested he get some silk, use it as a canvas, and she would sell it as a scarf. He promptly went down to Fabric Row in Philadelphia, PA and even though he came back with polyester instead of silk, he painted it and was able to get Barneys New York to place an order. From there, Kevin O’Brien Studio was born. Today, with real silk and the help of a handful of trusted collaborators and employees, the studio creates some of the most elegantly unique, beautiful textiles, decorative pillows and bedding in the industry.
